Music
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
Worship and singing are often used synonymously in the church, but music is just one aspect of worship. As Christians, we sing because God instructs us to do so. When we gather and sing songs of praise to God as the church, we worship God and we encourage and instruct one another. Singing together expresses our own faith while it nourishes the faith of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. What we sing about God shapes what we know about God because people tend to remember sung truth far more easily than preached truth. Therefore, the songs we sing as a congregation are extremely important because of their formative power, guiding us through life and death as we praise, give thanks, confess, and lament together.
At Christ Our Hope, we place a high value on congregational singing because the truth we sing together as a family takes precedence over instrumental support or vocal leadership from the stage. There is a team of gifted musicians that leads us in musical worship each week by singing and playing instruments, but they are not worshiping in our stead; they are leading us as we all worship together. Every voice matters.
