Serve

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11–12

Jesus is the head of the Church (Col 1:18), the one responsible for the growth and maturity of His body. He has designed His body in such a way that we depend upon each other for growth, progress, and effectiveness. We are an interdependent community, and we’re responsible for ministering our gifts as we serve one another and the world. At Christ Our Hope, there are endless opportunities for informal ministry within our fellowship and beyond, but our various ministry teams are the primary venues for formal ministry. Every covenant member commits to use their spiritual gifts to accomplish the works of service God has prepared (Eph 2:10), because each member is indispensable to this local expression of Christ’s body.

A brief note on the use of the word “volunteer.” Volunteer suggests unpaid (vs. paid). It suggests less responsibility than paid staff. It can also suggest that something is optional: you could get involved. But every covenant member’s contribution matters. We need everyone to contribute and use their gifts (Rom 12:3–8; 1 Pet 4:10-11). Contribution is key to community: “We’re all in this together! This is OUR church.” So, if you’re considering becoming a covenant member, think of serving in terms of joyful obligation instead of optional opportunity. To belong is to be responsible. To be a covenant member is to have ownership. Covenant membership is required to serve on any one of our ministry teams.
